Extended Family Support Program
The Extended Family Support Program (EFSP), run by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), offers short-term help to relatives who are caring for children but are not part of the formal child welfare system.
Through this program, families can get support with:
-
Applying for child-only grants
-
Getting essential goods and services
-
Connecting to community resources
An EFSP caseworker stays with the family until guardianship is finalized. During that time, they provide crisis support, help with family mediation, and make referrals for legal, medical, and housing services. Families may also receive cash or in-kind assistance to help keep their home stable.
*Clients must be referred by DCFS to participate in this program*
